This guide will walk you through the essential steps to set up your very first digital restaurant menu using menu.url.rw in just a few minutes. Let's transform your paper menu into a dynamic digital asset!
Before You Begin: What You'll Need
To make the setup process smooth, gather a few things first:
- menu.URL.RW Account: You'll need an account with us. If you haven't already, sign up for our Free plan to get started!
- Basic Restaurant Info: Have your restaurant's name ready. You might also want the address and phone number handy if you wish to display them.
- Your Menu (Even a Draft): Grab your current paper menu or even just a list of your main categories (like Appetizers, Main Courses, Drinks) and a few items within each, along with their prices. Don't worry about perfection yet; you can easily add more details later.
Ready? Let's dive in!
Step 1: Log In and Find the Menu Section
First, log into your main URL.RW account dashboard using your credentials. Once logged in, look for the dedicated section for managing your digital menus. Depending on your dashboard layout, this might be called "QR Menus," "My Menus," or possibly "Stores." Click into that section to begin.
Step 2: Add Your Restaurant (Store/Location)
Our platform uses the concept of "Stores" to help you organize your menus, especially if you might have multiple locations in the future. Even if you only have one restaurant right now, you'll need to add it as a store first.
- Look for an "Add Store," "Create Location," or similar button.
- Enter your restaurant's Name.
- You may also see fields for Address, Phone Number, Website, or a short Description. Fill these in if desired – they can often be displayed on your menu page.
- Save your store details.
This creates a container for the menu(s) associated with this specific location.
Step 3: Create Your First Menu
Now that you have a store set up, you can create your first menu within it.
- Navigate into the store you just created.
- Find and click the "Create Menu," "Add New Menu," or similar button.
- Give your menu a descriptive Name. This is crucial if you plan to have multiple menus later (e.g., "Dinner Menu," "Weekend Brunch," "Wine List," "Happy Hour Specials"). For now, something like "Main Menu" works perfectly.
- You might see options for a menu description or specific settings – you can usually skip these for now and come back later.
- Save the new menu.
Step 4: Organize with Categories
A well-organized menu is easy for customers to navigate. Categories are key!
- Within the menu editor for the menu you just created, look for an "Add Category" option.
- Create categories that match your menu structure, such as "Appetizers," "Soups & Salads," "Entrees," "Sides," "Desserts," "Beverages," etc.
- Give each category a clear name.
- You can usually reorder categories later if needed.
Think about the flow your customers expect when reading your menu. Logical categories make Browse simple and enjoyable.
Step 5: Add Your Menu Items
This is where your menu comes to life! Add items within the categories you just created.
- Select a category (e.g., "Appetizers").
- Click the "Add Item," "Create Item," or equivalent button.
- Fill in the essential details for each item: Item Name: (e.g., "Crispy Calamari," "Classic Caesar Salad")Price: (e.g., 12.99)Description: (Make it appealing! Briefly describe the dish, key ingredients.)
- Item Name: (e.g., "Crispy Calamari," "Classic Caesar Salad")
- Price: (e.g., 12.99)
- Description: (Make it appealing! Briefly describe the dish, key ingredients.)
- Highly Recommended: Add a Photo! Visuals significantly enhance digital menus. Upload a clear, appetizing photo of the dish if you have one.
- Optional Details: Look for fields to add Allergen Information (e.g., contains nuts, gluten-free) or configure Item Options/Variants (e.g., different sizes for a pizza, add-on options for a burger – note: advanced options might be tied to paid plans).
- Save each item and repeat for all the dishes you want to add initially.
Start with your most popular items or one full category. Remember, you can always add more or refine details later!
Step 6: Generate Your Menu's QR Code
Once you have at least a few items listed, you can generate the QR code that links directly to this menu.
- Navigate back to your main menu list or store view.
- You should see an option next to your newly created menu like "Get QR Code," "View QR," or a QR code icon. Click it.
- The system will instantly generate a unique QR code for that specific menu.
- You'll usually see options to download the QR code image (as a PNG or SVG file). Download the format best suited for your needs (PNG is great for web and basic printing, SVG is better for high-quality printing).
- Basic customization (colors, maybe adding a logo) might be available here depending on your plan. We cover advanced customization in another guide!
Step 7: Test and Display!
Before printing dozens of codes, test it!
- Scan the QR code you just downloaded using your own smartphone's camera app.
- Does it open the menu correctly in your browser?
- Does the menu look right? Are the items and prices correct?
- Once you're happy, think about placement. Put the QR code where customers can easily see and scan it: on table tents, stickers on tables, near the entrance, on flyers, or even embedded on your website. Ensure good lighting and a reasonable size for easy scanning.
